Get Your Green Hour
There is a growing concerns among today’s parents, educators and health advocates: Children aren’t playing outside much anymore. We are raising a generation of children who have lost their connection with the outdoors.
This change in society’s relationship with nature has
profound implications for the mental, physical
and spiritual health of future generations.
In his book “Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our
Children From Nature-Deficit Disorder”, Richard Louv
describes important health and developmental reasons
that children need nature. Louv’s book has helped to
spark a “No Child Left Inside” movement to address
this emerging health crisis and reverse this trend.
To raise awareness about this important health issue,
Greenfest 2007 has adopted the theme “Get Your Green Hour.” Greenfest will challenge children to get outside at least an hour a day, five days a week. Through special events that stress the fun and adventure of the outdoors, Greenfest will encourage kids to limit indoor time with television and video games, and get plenty of unstructured, outdoor play.
You can help! First, your organization can help plan a special event as part of Greenfest, using this year’s special theme. Once the event schedule is complete, please promote Greenfest and the messages about this important issue to your members!
