Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity

Along with many other beautification projects, Keep Athens-Clarke County Beautiful (KACCB) administers the Adopt Athens- Adopt-A-Highway Program for all of the county maintained roads. With over 65 active Adopt-A-Highway groups in our county, KACCB recently started a new award program honoring the groups that go above and beyond the requirements of the program.

This year, KACCB would like to recognize the Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity the as the 2006 Adopt-A-Highway Group of the Year! In October 2005, the Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity brothers adopted East Campus Road from Baldwin Street to South Milledge Avenue. Since that time, the Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity brothers have been completely committed to volunteering their time and energy to the reduction of litter on our streets and roads. The Adopt-A-Highway program requires that adopting organizations complete at least one litter pick up a season. The Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity brothers go above and beyond this requirement and organize monthly roadside clean-ups! In addition, the members of the Delta Sigma Phi fraternity maintain excellent communication with the staff at KACCB. This type of dedication set the Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity apart from other groups.

We would like to honor the Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity brothers for their service to our community. Their participation benefits all Athens citizens who wish to live in a healthy, litter-free community.

Jittery Joe’s -Eastside

Each month, the KACCB Board of Directors selects a local business as the Beautiful Business of the Month. In 2006, Jittery Joe’s –Eastside was selected as the November Beautiful Business recipient. At the end of each year, the Board reviews the 12 businesses that were honored and selects one business that they feel stood out above the rest. This year, Jittery Joe’s - Eastside was selected as the 2006 Beautiful Business of the Year! Co-managers Laura Andrews and Scott Creney have maintained a quaint and relaxing environment outside of their business with the help of Chris Swann and Andrew Wahler of Lotus Landscape Design and Installation, The plan was to create a colorful and pleasing environment separated from the existing parking lot and cars of close proximity.  By using existing mature plant material as a buffer, the designers accentuated the plantings with flowering shrubs and perennials as well as adding a large annual bed.  The annual bed is replaced twice a year and typically contains a mix of annuals, perennials, and seasonal centerpieces that can be seen and enjoyed by Jittery Joe's customers as well as passing motorists.
